A Girl, a Goat, And a Zombie (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #25.1) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

***This review will contain spoilers*** Could I have lived without reading this short story? Yes, it didn't add anything to the main story. And beyond that I'm not a fan of baseball nor do I really know much about the game. I do find it ridiculous that Hamilton will write about anything and everything but putting together a good story line? Clearly, too much work and effort needed.  This short story was just a couple of pages long and quite frankly was less annoying than the last few books I have read from her. This short story was actually decent, especially, since none of her boy toys were involved and I didn't have to put up with Anita's atrocious sex life. If anything it reminded me a little of old school Blake just raising zombies. Exactly, how we were first introduced to her dozens of books earlier. I truly wish that Hamilton would go back to that type of writing and story telling but I know better than that.  Overall, it was okay but you could forgo reading this ...

Crimson Death (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #25) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Anita has never seen Damian, her vampire servant, in such a state. The rising sun doesn’t usher in the peaceful death that he desperately needs. Instead, he’s being bombarded with violent nightmares and blood sweats. And now, with Damian at his most vulnerable, Anita needs him the most. The vampire who created him, who subjected him to centuries of torture, might be losing control, allowing rogue vampires to run wild and break one of their kind’s few strict taboos. Some say love is a great motivator, but hatred gets the job done, too. And when Anita joins forces with her friend Edward to stop the carnage, Damian will be at their side, even if it means traveling back to the land where all his nightmares spring from...a place that couldn’t be less welcoming to a vampire, an assassin, and a necromancer. Well...this isn't Hamilton's worst book ever. But it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. At least she had some type of plot goi...

Wounded (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #24.5) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Anita attends the wedding of her close friend but finds that even on the happiest of days there are wounds that need healing. She and the wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel are asked to talk to the bride’s thirteen-year-old brother, Tomas, who is struggling to recover from a recent gunshot wound. Depressed and demoralized, Tomas isn’t doing his physical therapy and could spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair…How can Anita, Micah, and Nathaniel convince Tomas that he can heal when he’s given up? They tell him about their own scars and how they took back their own lives after they were wounded. And Anita will realize how lucky they are to have not only survived their pasts, but to now be able to make their own formal commitment to each other— and the vampire in her life… When will I ever learn to not waste my time on these short stories? I think that there was only one out of many that I've read that was actually worth it. The oth...

Dead Ice (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #24) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Anita Blake has the highest kill count of any vampire executioner in the country. She’s a U.S. Marshal who can raise zombies with the best of them. But ever since she and master vampire Jean-Claude went public with their engagement, all she is to anyone and everyone is Jean-Claude’s fiancée. It’s wreaking havoc with her reputation as a hard ass—to some extent. Luckily, in professional circles, she’s still the go-to expert for zombie issues. And right now, the FBI is having one hell of a zombie issue. Someone is producing zombie porn. Anita has seen her share of freaky undead fetishes, so this shouldn’t bother her. But the women being victimized aren’t just mindless, rotting corpses. Their souls are trapped behind their eyes, signaling voodoo of the blackest kind. It’s the sort of case that can leave a mark on a person. And Anita’s own soul may not survive unscathed . . . This book is exactly why I am going to keep reading through th...

Shutdown (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #22.75) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: An Anita Blake short story, featuring our favorite bad boy werewolf, yep,  Richard Zeeman. He’s been working his therapy: read on to see the results that hard work and being brave enough to own your whole self can get you. What was even the point of this short story? This just demonstrated how out of touch Hamilton is with her audience. From Anita flaunting herself and degrading Richard's fiancé to the whole tone of the story just being passive aggressive and overall just fucking stupid.  This was supposed to be a sit down lunch between Anita, Micah, Richard and his fiancé Ellen to help her understand why Richard needs to continue having sex with Anita... yeah doesn't that just sound stupid? The first chapter alone Anita is already comparing herself to Ellen and letting us know just how much better she is. From her hair being darker and her being physically fitter than Ellen...ugh get off your high horse.  The first c...

Dancing (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #22.5) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: For most people, summer barbecues are nothing to be afraid of. But Anita isn’t exactly plain vanilla—and neither is her love life. So it takes a special kind of courage to attend a barbecue thrown by her friend Sergeant Zerbrowski. Walking into a backyard full of cops and their families with wereleopards Micah and Nathaniel both looking gorgeous on her arm won’t be easy, even with almost-four-year-old Matthew Vespucci to break the ice…Anita is determined to have a good time with her family, just like everyone else. But it doesn’t take long for tensions to rise among the adults and kids. And Anita will learn that gossip and innuendo can be just as dangerous as anything the undead can throw at her… I hate e-books because it's just a short story that doesn't add anything to the main story and it's a way for them to make a quick buck. I personally feel that short stories should be shared on author's or publisher sites for fr...

Affliction (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #22) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Micah’s estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.” Anita Blake makes her living off of zombies—but these aren’t the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes…Where will it stop? Even Anita Blake doesn’t know. When I noticed that this book was over 600 pages almost double what Hamilton's books usually are I was worried and kinda panicked. This series has been on a crazy rollercoaster of major highs and major lows. Lately, it's been mostly lows so when I saw this book was double what her books usually are I was crazy nervous. If Hamilton can't come up with a decent plot for a 300 page book then what the fuck is she doing with a 600 page book? However, I am beyond excited to say that this is for sure a redemption b...

Kiss The Dead (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #21) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: When a fifteen-year-old girl is abducted by vampires, it's up to U.S. Marshal Anita Blake to find her. And when she does, she's faced with something she's never seen before: a terrifyingly ordinary group of people - kids, grandparents, soccer moms - all recently turned and willing to die to avoid serving a master. And where there's one martyr, there will be more...But even vampires have monsters that they're afraid of. And Anita is one of them... One of the saddest things that could happen is the summary being better than the book. This summary has more plot than the book itself. At this point, I have no one else to blame but myself. This series has gone downhill quicker than the stock market crash. I don't understand how a series can start off so damn amazing to now each book barely having any plot. Lately, the way the books have been turning out is that we have some type of plot at the beginning to kinda get th...

Beauty (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #20.5) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: You’d think I’d get used to seeing such a beautiful man and knowing he was mine, but it never grew old, as if his beauty and the fact that he was mine, and I was his, would forever surprise me. With a vampire like Jean Claude around, it’s far too easy for Anita Blake to doubt her own appearance—and the hold it has on those who love her. But one hot tub and two incredibly sexy men—Jean Claude and Asher—will make her feel like the most lusted-after woman alive…or undead. Not bad for a mere human… This e-book was meant to be a spicy outtake from Kiss The Dead  but nothing was really too spicy about it. I've read some of Hamilton's short stories and e-books before and this has got to be the shortest one ever. If anything, I believe this little scene was probably cut during the editing phase an to make a quick buck they released it as a e-book.  Hamilton hasn't been shy about adding unnecessary sexual content and scenes. She ha...

The Harlequin (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #15) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Anita Blake is about to face the challenge of her life. Into her world-a world already overflowing with power-have come creatures so feared that powerful, centuries-old vampires refuse to mention their names. It is forbidden to speak of The Harlequin unless you've been contacted. And to be contacted by The Harlequin is to be under sentence of death. This book has definitely been better than the last few books that I've read from this series but yet still doesn't top the first six books. I saw a glimpse of the old Hamilton writing style that we have been familiar with through the first six books. There was actually a plot and an actual villain!!! Now you wouldn't think this would be asking for much BUT lately with the last few books Hamilton seems to have lost her creativity with a bunch of senseless sex scenes.  Anita used to be this badass, no nonsense vampire hunter and now she has been reduced to this sexual conduit f...

Danse Macabre (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #14) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary:      These days, Anita Blake is less interested in vampire politics than in an ancient, ordinary dread she shares with women down the ages: she may be pregnant. And, if she is, whether the father is a vampire, a werewolf, or someone else entirely, he knows perfectly well that being a Federal Marshal known for raising the dead and being a vampire executioner, is no way to bring up a baby. I'm on the fence with this book. I'm not sure if I like it or if I hate it. There was some type of plot. Was it well executed? Definitely, not. Was there a lot of sex scenes? Yeah, but again it's like Hamilton is using sex scenes to fill the book. By that I mean, it seems like she's trying to meet a page quota so she's just putting in a ton of sex scenes to meet it. It seems like whenever we're progressing in the story she drops a sex scene. I'm not sure if it's because she's not sure what to do next to get the plot g...

Micah (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #13) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: There are lots of reasons to raise the dead-some private, some public. In this case, the feds have a witness who died before he could speak on the record. They want him raised so his testimony can be taken. So here I am, on a plane to Philadelphia, flying off to do my job. But I'm not alone. Micah is with me. Micah, head of the St. Louis wereleopard pard. King to my Queen. The only one of my lovers who can stir my blood with just a glance from his chartreuse cat's eyes. I was happy to have him at my side. Until he mentioned that this will be our first time alone together. No Master Vampire. No Alpha Werewolf. Just me and Micah. And all my fears and doubts... Not sure if someone told Hamilton to chill with all the crazy extreme sex scenes but we were only subjected to one sex scene in this book, if we can really call it a book. Hamilton's books normally range from 400-700 pages per book but this one was less than 250 pages. T...

Incubus Dreams (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #12) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Anita's life is more complicated than ever, as she is caught between her obligations to the living and the undead. A vampire serial killer who preys on strippers is on the loose. Called in to consult on the case, Anita fears her judgment may be clouded by a conflict of interest. For she is, after all, the consort of Jean-Claude, the ever-intoxicating Master Vampire of the City. Surrounded by suspicion, overwhelmed by her attempts to control the primal lusts that continue to wrack her, Anita does something unprecedented: she calls for help. This has got to be the worst book in the series thus far. I'm so disappointed because from the start of the series we've gotten used to a nicely written, creative and filled with plot twists story. The first half a dozen books or so of this series mentioned sex here and there but didn't have any sex scenes. The books focused more on the story, the protagonist journey through these horr...

Cerulean Sins (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #11) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contains spoilers*** Summary: Anita Blake is trying to get her life back to “normal” after a break-up with her werewolf lover. She has settled into a pattern of domesticity, which means that the new man in her life, the leopard shapeshifter Micah, has no problem sharing her with Jean-Claude, Master Vampire of the City. Things are as peaceful as they ever get for someone who raises the dead, when Jean-Claude receives an unexpected and unwelcome visitor: Musette, the very beautiful, very twisted representative of the European Council of Vampires. Anita soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous game of vampire power politics. To add to her troubles, she is asked to consult on a series of brutal killings, which seem to be the work of something un-human. The investigation leads her to Cerulean Sins, a vampire-run establishment that deals in erotic videos, videos that cater to very specific tastes. Anita knows one creature of the night who has such interests — Jean...

Obsidian Butterfly (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #9) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: Edward was a hit man. He specialized in monsters. Vampires, shapeshifters, anything and everything. There were people like me who did it legal, but Edward didn't sweat the legalities or, hell, the ethics. He was an equal opportunity killer. I may be one of the few friends that Edward has, but it's like being friends with a tame leopard. It may curl on the foot of your bed and let you pet its head, but it can still eat your throat out... Another fantastic book to this series! I'm happy that the 'boys' took a backseat and it was all about Anita and her crazy ass adventures. Although, do mutilated bodies count as an adventure? In this book, Anita is going to New Mexico because Edward cashed in his favor from Anita to help him on whatever he decides. Anita is brought in on a case where bodies are being mutilated and people are being skinned alive. Never a dull moment in Anita's life.  It's so refreshing to have a...

Blue Moon (Anita Blake. Vampire Hunter #8) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
(This review will contain spoilers) Summary: When she chose master vampire Jean-Claude over her ex-fiancé, alpha werewolf Richard Zeeman, Anita learned that sometimes love is not enough. But though she and Richard won’t be walking down any aisles, she can’t turn her back on him when he’s arrested on a rape charge in Tennessee. Anita knows firsthand that Richard has the morals of a saint—or at least a boy scout. But his guilt or innocence is not the issue. He’s behind bars, and in five days a full moon will rise… Anita yet again is the knight in shinning armor. Whenever someone is in danger and in need of help she drops everything to go and help them out. This time Richard got himself in quite a pickle to the point where Anita has to work as quickly as possible to get Richard out of jail or else he will out himself as a werewolf. I used to be a fan of Richard way back in the beginning when he was first introduced to us but now with everything that he has done and everything we've le...

Burnt Offerings (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #7) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
***This review will contain spoilers*** Summary: "You can't trust anyone who sleeps with the monsters." That's what I've always said. That's what I've always believed. But now I'm the one sharing a bed with the Master Vampire of the City. Me, Anita Blake. The woman the vampires call the Executioner. From part of the solution, I've become part of the problem. So it hits close to home when an arsonist begins to target vampire-owned businesses all over town -- an arsonist who seems to want to destroy more than just property. It's the monsters who are in danger now. And it's up the the Executioner to save them from the inferno... This has been a nice change of pace. From the start, Anita has come up against very old and very powerful vampires with different kinds of abilities. Throughout this book, we have an insight on just how much the triumvirate with Richard and Jean-Claude has affected Anita. The council comes strolling into town who are ...

The Killing Dance (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #6) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
*This review will contain spoilers* Summary: Dating both a vampire and a werewolf isn't easy. But just to complicate Anita's already messy life, someone has put a price on her head. Love cannot save her this time, so she turns to Edward, hitman extraordinaire, for help. But finding the person behind the threat won't be easy, because as both a vampire hunter and zombie reanimator, Anita has made a lot of enemies-both human and otherwise. This has got to be one of the most intense books out of the whole series thus far. If you thought the previous books were dark, twisted and gory those pale in comparison to this one. It's like Hamilton turned it up a notch both in violence and romantic relationships. And we've got quite a few bad guys gunning after Anita.  We are first introduced to Sabin; visiting master vampire and Dominic; human servant and necromancer who are seeking out Anita for her help. Sabin changed his diet for the love of his life and unfortunately he sta...

Bloody Bones (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #5) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
(((This review will contain spoilers))) Summary: Anita Blake, vampire hunter and animator, takes a bite out of crime-of the supernatural kind. But even someone who deals with death on a daily basis can be unnerved by its power... When Branson, Missouri, is hit with a death wave-four unsolved murders-it doesn't take an expert to realize that all is not well. But luckily for the locals, Anita is an expert-in just the kinds of preternatural goings-on that have everyone spooked. And she's got an "in" with just the kind of creature who can make sense of the slayings: a sexy master vampire known as Jean Claude. We're back on track baby!!! The previous book had me nervous and worried thinking that this series was going to tank with the random romance trying to make a love triangle appear out of thin air. But luckily this book has redeemed the mistakes of The Lunatic Cafe . Since the first book I had no issues with the series. It was engaging, interesting and completely ...

The Lunatic Cafe (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #4) By: Laurell K. Hamilton (Book Review)

Image
(This review will contain spoilers)  Summary: Anita has fallen for the leader of a local pack of werewolves. She's survived a lot, but this love thing may kill her yet. You guys know how much I have been loving this series so far and I have been hoping we keep going on this trajectory but alas we have hit a major speedbump. Not in the mystery/ crime fighting part of it but the whole romance aspect just shifted in this book to another level that I absolutely hate and do not understand. This book was action packed and yet again we're being exposed to a different aspect of Anita's world. All of that was top notch as per usual but Hamilton really fucked up with the development of Anita's and Richard's relationship and threw in the mix, Jean-Claude. There is so much to unpack.  I had such high hopes for this series and then Hamilton threw in out of nowhere romance and now I'm barely holding on. When we finished the previous book Anita was newly dating Richard, a wer...
