Vexed (The Morganville Vampires #10.2) By: Rachel Caine (Book Review)
Summary:
Myrnin and Oliver, who have a strange affinity, mostly because they’re both capable of being utterly weird and cruel when pushed, but also capable of kindness, too. Myrnin’s kindness is on display here, but so is his weirdness, and Oliver’s cruelty. A little of everything, and a creepy tale of a pursuit that ends in a sinister house with secrets, ghosts, lies, and monsters.
I am beyond impressed with this short story! And I didn't know that I needed some more Oliver and Myrnin scenes. I love how they interact with each other and I am curious to know exactly how old they both are. It was also so interesting how one is haunted by the past while the other looks only to the future and does not like to dwell on things that cannot be changed. There is definitely a lot that we can learn from those two and I am so happy we got this insight!
Do you know what is scarier than an old vampire who is a little psycho? The ghost of a little girl who scares said psycho vampire. It's not often where we get scenes from Myrnin's point of view and in all honesty I expected his thoughts and the way he views things to be a little more chaotic. Instead, I wonder if he overplays the crazy role so whomever he is around under estimates him and he can gain the upper hand. We saw him achieve this with Bishop, who's to say he doesn't normally act this way to get on top.
It is very surprising how much Claire seems to of influenced Myrnin because he references her and her friends quite a few times. I wonder if Caine intentionally did this to show that the scooby gang have influenced him or to remind us of the main characters? Kinda hard to tell.
Whom better to deal with a ghost than Myrnin? This vampire is nuts and kooky beyond belief. I loved the backstory of the Vexen family and how they used to kill people and steal their belongings within their own home. What first started off as a little ghost girl whom you would feel sorry for quickly turned into a scary moment when you realize she is just as crazy as her deceased family members.
I didn't know that ghosts were powerful enough to trap a vampire inside a house. Granted said house was where all those horrible murders were committed but I am curious now. If ghosts exist then does that mean other supernatural creatures exist as well???
I am surprised that this series hasn't been made into a tv show yet. I feel like it would be a perfect series to adapt and wouldn't be too expensive to make. Hopefully, I will see a good adaption in my lifetime.
I loved this short story and if anything it has made me more curious on what else is there to discover.
