Succubus On Top (Georgina Kincaid #2) By: Richelle Mead (Book Review)
*This review will include spoilers.*
Summary:
Love hurts, and no one knows it better than Georgina Kincaid. If she so much as kisses Seth Mortensen, the shy, sexy writer she's been dating, she'll drain his life force. Admittedly, the shapeshifting and immortality perks of a succubus are terrific, but it's completely unfair that a she-demon whose purpose is seduction can't get down with the one mortal who accepts her for who she is. . .
It's not just her personal life that's in chaos. Doug, Georgina's co-worker at a local bookstore, has been exhibiting bizarre behavior, and Georgina suspects something far more demonic than double espressos. She could use an assist from Bastien, an irresistibly charming incubus and her best immortal friend, but he's giving Georgina some highly distracting come-hither vibes. Georgina is going to have to work solo on this one-and fast, because soon, Doug's life won't be the only one on the line. . .
I truly enjoy books that have several plotlines going on. We have the main one where something freaky is going on with the people in Georgina's work life and she of course takes it upon herself to find out what it is and is determined to stop it. She's roped in to help her incubus friend Bastien when he comes into town looking to wreak havoc to save his skin. And we must of course have some relationship ups and downs.
One of the best parts of this book for me was that it's not just heaven vs hell in this world, there is also different creatures and gods from various theological backgrounds/mythologies. The basis of them still being around or even existing is because if humans still have faith in a certain god/goddess then that gives them enough power to still be present on Earth. It was briefly mentioned that different gods/ goddesses can have a corporeal form on Earth but if their human manifestation passes away then their spirit still lives on. It's like their power doesn't get destroyed but simply transfers back to another plane. It put it into perspective that their world isn’t so black and white. I found it funny that the angel-demon duo found it uncomfortable talking about different gods and creatures walking the Earth.
Doug; Georgina’s co-worker and friend was acting very manically and all of a sudden his band becomes extremely successful, However, with all that success came erratic behaviour that could not be explained. Georgina being strongly protective of her friends she finds out who has been supplying the 'drug' that has been causing said manic behaviour. She finds out that it's actually ambrosia; food of the gods. It enhances the best qualities within a person. For a human it becomes extremely addictive and causes them to crash to rock bottom just like with regular drugs. She ends up arranging a meeting with Sol; the supplier and kills him. Later she finds out that he is the god Soma, the divine embodiment of ambrosia. His physical manifestation is gone for now but he will come back to the Earthly plane eventually, Ambrosia will always in some way be circulated amongst the humans.
I'm thrilled that we finally got another peak into Georgina's succubus lifestyle just because I feel she is extremely humanized and we get very rare insights into her succubus life. If you are writing from the point of view of a succubus, vampire, goddess etc then at least let us see their life more often than just very few rare moments. She ends up seducing Dana the leader of a affluent religious group. A leaked video of their lesbian affair runs rampant on the internet and that caused such havoc in the group. Personally, I don't really see what the sinister part was in all of this other than helping a married woman cheat. If anything she helped unbalance a religious hate group trying to defund planned parenthood and spewing hate towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. Seems almost like she was helping heaven's side.
It was nice to finally have some flashbacks of Georgina's life. From everything that Mead has been hinting at it seems our girl Georgie is about 3000 years old. I like the flashbacks from her very long lived life and I hope in the future books there are more! Bastien, Georgina's long time best friend helped us see a different side to her that we've never seen before. However, Georgie can't keep it in her fucking pants. Once a cheater, always a cheater, eh? She cheated on her husband when she was human and then she cheats on Seth with Bastien who shapeshifted as Seth. Definitely, fucked if you ask me. I can't sympathize with someone who put themselves in such precarious situations. She knows that their relationship isn't going anywhere and it will lead only to heartbreak so why keep holding on to someone?
Rating:
I am going to give Succubus On Top 3.5 stars on 5. It was definitely a lot slower than the first book. It was nice to see the Georgina Kincaid world expanding. I love the idea of different creatures of theological backgrounds co-existing together, I have yet to read a book that has done such a thing. I'm just not a fan of Georgina's weird relationship with Seth. I find it unfair to him and just selfish of her to hold onto someone that she will have to end the relationship with. I hope the next book is more thrilling.
