City Of Demons (Georgina Kincaid #2.5) By: Richelle Mead (Book Review)

 (This review will contain spoilers)

Summary:

Georgina is finally, irrevocably in love, and she doesn’t care who knows it. There’s just one problem. If she and her boyfriend, Seth Mortensen, succumb to their all-consuming desire, the consequences will be dire: Seth will be destroyed. Of course, no one cares about their struggle to keep their hands to themselves, especially not Georgina’s archdemon boss, who is sending her to L.A. to sit on a demon-run tribunal. An immortal has been murdered—and the high court is determined to find the killer and set an example…

Bribery, corruption, murder—the three demons on trial will stop at nothing to avoid a guilty verdict. But all the dark magic zipping through the atmosphere must be going to Georgina’s head, because suddenly she suspects that Seth is up to no good. Now she can’t help but wonder how far she’d be willing to go to make sure she doesn’t lose the love of her immortal life…

For a short story, it is very well written and extremely well thought out. We weren't just given insight on Georgina's and Seth's shaky relationship but also given insight on how and why Angels fell and became demons. Which that last one alone was extremely interesting!

Georgina was sent to Los Angeles by Jerome to be his proxy in a murder trial. Funny that Hell has a judicial system in place, however, it makes sense or else it will be nothing but chaos within their ranks. Georgina invited Seth that way they can have a romantic gateway, unfortunately, there was nothing romantic on their trip to LA.

Georgina really is messed up in the head. She sleeps with random guys to get their life force and she gets jealous when Seth chats with a waitress? For someone who has already cheated in the relationship she's quick to think that Seth is developing feelings for a complete stranger serving him coffee. Georgina shapeshifts as the waitress Beth and keeps inviting Seth to try and see if he will cheat. I don't think that she realized that her personality would slip through and Seth would become more and more comfortable with 'Beth'. I would understand snooping around and seeing if you partner is being unfaithful but shapeshifting? A little excessive. Already there was a lack of trust on her part and an insecurity in her relationship. The shapeshifting just proves that her insecurities and mistrust are on another level. What's the point in being with someone if you don't have any trust in them? You'll be in a constant state of fear and anxiety when there is a lack of trust. At the end of it all she didn't tell Seth of what she did which for that I don't blame her since if she did tell him then their relationship would have been over. Personally, I don't think she should have pursued a relationship with him from the start.

During this story, we got to see a demons perspective on why he fell from heaven because Kurtis lost a bet to Georgina. So she got to see and experience his entire existence. Georgina experienced Kurtis' anguish and pain seeing humankind fighting and committing atrocious acts against one another. It became too much for him to see the same human greed play out over and over again so he fell and became a demon. If humans couldn't change then he would make them pay for their sins. I can understand that perspective because look at us? Instead of being kind with one another and building a beautiful world for all of us to live in our greed and pride makes us tear each other apart.

The icing on the cake that really wrapped up this story was the mystery of who murdered the demon Anthony. I hate it when a story ends without the mystery or murderer being revealed. Huge pet peeve for me! It was Noelle the arch-demoness who was the murderer all along. Noelle was jealous of Anthony having his own little side piece and wanted nothing to do with her which caused her to to be enraged and destroyed him. Seems whether you are human or a demon you can still be bitten by the green eyed monster.

Rating:

I am going to give City of Demons 5 stars on 5. For a short story, it is very well written and gave an insight into the mind of a demon which we haven't had thus far in the series. And it was very interesting! We got to see Seth and Georgina spend time together, we found out what a trial is like for demons and towards the end there was the a-ha moment where the real murderer was caught! All in all it was a great read!
