Wonder Woman (Movie Review)

 ***This review will contain spoilers***

Summary:

Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island Paradise, Diana meets an American pilot who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

I really enjoyed the opening of the movie. The settings alone were marvelous and truly jaw-dropping. It was great how they presented the story of man, how Themyscira came to be and how Diana was created. I've already watched the animated movie of Wonder Woman and was hesitant to how the cinematic one would be able to one up it.

The movie was going beautifully until Gal Gadot acting came into the picture. I don't know how she had such a difficult time acting because every scene was like plastic face syndrome. No emotion, no nothing.

I hated the scene between the Germans and the Amazons fighting. It makes no sense why Diana would sit idly by for a huge chunk of the fight then 'help out'. Young Diana wanted to learn how to fight and when given the chance doesn't jump in right away? Doesn't track for me.

I love the fighting scenes after she leaves Themyscira. It's well done shows Diana's fighting techniques, however, where was this fighting when her Amazonian sisters were being slaughtered? It seems like two completely different characters and fighters. Her dawning the suit and Godkiller sword doesn't change her fighting style at all.

It's mind boggling the scene between her and Ares meeting for the first time. Why the fuck was she repeating she's a princess from Themyscira? Like shit, change the record already. It's bad enough she was repeating it but doing so without emotion is off putting and disappointing. And everyone knew that Ares could possibly come back since no one was sure he was killed...so no one thought to keep tabs on him? Is that not weird? At least in the animated movie, Ares was trapped on the island and seduced an Amazon to help him escape. That sounds a million times better than what this movie gave us.

Rating:

I'm giving this movie 2.5 stars on 5. I was not overly impressed with Gal Gadot's acting chops. I've always said Alexandra Daddario would be the perfect fit for Wonder Woman. She has worked on animated projects for DC so fingers crossed that with the new James Gunn Dc universe she'll be our Wonder Woman. Chris Pine was acting his little ass out having to make up for Gadot's lack of ...acting. I did enjoy seeing the Island and all the Amazonians. They were the best part of the movie.
