Automatic (The Morganville Vampires #10.6) By: Rachel Caine (Book Review)

 Summary:

This stand-alone story is set late in the series, but before the Daylighters show up, and it deals with something...Why don’t the vamps have a vending machine for blood?

I love these short stories! I love reading the point of view of different characters. And this time around we are reading from Michael’s point of view. I am always curious about Michael because he doesn’t emote much, he’s not very expressive and I am especially, curious on his perspective on him being a vampire but also the youngest vampire in Morganville.

Part of this short story is the vampires trying to modernize blood dispensation when the blood bank is closed or otherwise occupied…should it even be an issue though? That just sounds like either the blood bank is understaffed or unorganized. Which a town being run by vampires having a hours of operation issue seems farfetched to say the least.

The concept of blood being distributed in a more mainstream way isn’t a foreign concept but I will say it being distributed via cans and in a vending machine is something I have never read before. How ironic that the vampire who was asked to be the first to use the vending machine was the one who essentially almost lost control due to bloodlust. He is the youngest vampire in town and thus, the perfect vampire to demonstrate how a vending machine works and yet the formula for the blood was tested on older vampires only who have had centuries to control their blood lust.

I will say for being the youngest, Michael showed a lot of restraint and removed himself from a situation that would have otherwise ruined his life if he actually hurt Eve. I don’t understand why they would go through all the trouble to test and formulate for a blood can when already you have so many vampires opposed to the blood bags.

I did enjoy seeing a more vulnerable side to Michael. We rarely get a peak into his emotions and thoughts, especially, since being turned into a vampire. We know he loves Eve but it’s kinda hard not to think about the long term when one is a vampire and the other a human.

I am going to call it. Either Eve eventually agrees in being turned into a vampire which I doubt or they find a way to turn Michael back into a human.
