Birds Of Prey (Movie Review)
***This review will contain spoilers***
Summary:
It's open season on Harley Quinn when her explosive breakup with the Joker puts a big fat target on her back. Unprotected and on the run, Quinn faces the wrath of narcissistic crime boss Black Mask, his right hand man, Victor Zsasz, and every other thug in the city. But things soon even out for Harley when she becomes unexpected allies with three deadly women- Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya.
Someone needs to come and slap me across the face for not having seen this movie sooner! This movie exceeded beyond my wildest expectations! I loved Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn and even though the Suicide Squad movie wasn’t all that great, one shining star was her and her totally embodying Harley. Jared Leto as the Joker? Well…not so much. I’ve always been such a huge fan of DC comics growing up and I used to watch the animated Batman series on video cassette…yeah I’m that old! I’m so happy that as an adult I’ve been able to witness an amazing portrayal of Harley and I doubt anyone would come close to Robbie’s portrayal.
Now I won’t lie and say that there weren’t some issues with this movie because there were. However, with how inconsistent DC movies have been this one was definitely a hit! I loved how it was primarily a female cast of bad ass women! No, I don’t hate men but can’t us women have some feel good movies too?! I loved that Harley took centre stage and we were slowly introduced to characters with a proper backstory (for the most part). I also quite liked the format of the movie with Harley narrating the movie. I enjoyed the pivot and back & forth timeline throughout the movie. They did it in a way where it wasn’t confusing and easy to follow.
One of my favourite characters is Huntress! She has such an interesting background and I loved how she was introduced in this movie. The one thing I wasn’t thrilled about was how she was portrayed. While she is a socially awkward individual, I don’t like how they had her looking like she doesn’t know how to drop witty one liners. She very much reminds me of the Punisher as far as how she tends to enact justice and revenge.
One of my favourite things about this movie was Harley's fight scenes! There were well choreographed and I could watch them over and over again. Even the final fight scene with all the ladies involved was epic! The first time all these ladies work together to kick some ass and it was a masterpiece! The most disappointing part of the movie was their approach on Black Canary. They give everyone but her flashbacks and they couldn't bother giving us a glimpse of her mother when she was Black Canary? Sloppy if you ask me. Black Canary is a deadly martial artist but yet in this movie her fight scenes were some of the more boring and awkward ones when in reality she's a better fighter than Harley.
Rating:
Birds of Prey is getting 4.5 stars on 5. It was such a great movie but they could have done it better though. Black Canary was just a lazy take on such a phenomenal character but overall? The movie was good and I would definitely rewatch it. (I have a few times already)
