The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life (The Morganville Vampires #0.5) By: Rachel Caine (Book Review)

 ***This review will contain spoilers***

Summary:

Eve Rosser is turning eighteen. Does she accept the Protection or go without?

This is a short story about Eve prior to the start of the series and the Glass Houses book. It is technically before the start of Glass Houses but I preferred to read a couple of the books in the series first and then read some of the short stories of our favourite or new characters. Makes it easier for me to understand the whole story and I love getting an insight on characters since the Morganville series is read from Claire's point of view.

I am impressed with how much Caine was able to include in a short story. Eve had to endure more than anyone should have to, especially, on their birthday. She is out with some friends drinking and celebrating her eighteenth birthday but things turn for the worse when one of her friends drives while under the influence. Of course it leads to an accident and only but two girls make it out alive. Eve and her best friends little sister Miranda. The same Miranda from the first book that 'predicted' Michael's death. Strangely enough she predicted their deaths as well. And if it wasn't for her interference and having Eve sit in a particular spot in the bus she would have died in the crash as well.

Immediately after the accident. Eve is faced with her parents and the family protector; Brandon. Having to choose whether she signs her life to his service or do the most dangerous thing; live in Morganville without a vampire to protect her. Brandon is a vengeful vampire from what we've seen in the first book. Once Eve rips the contract and throws it in Brandon's face her parents kick her out and she is on her own at the ripe age of eighteen.

With only a suitcase and no protection, Eve heads towards one place she thinks might save her from being vamp food for the night. She heads to Michael Glass' house and prays he's home to let her inside. However, Brandon is hot on heels. I'm surprised he didn't apprehend her before she left her parents place but again Brandon seems like the type of vampire that likes to play with his food. Just as the vampires were about to get her Michael lets Eve in and thus saving the day or should I say night.

Rating:
5 stars on 5! This was a great short story that adds context  to one of the most horrible nights that Eve had to endure. We also get to see just how Eve moved into Michael's house and gave us a better perspective on Eve. I much preferred this over the Diary of Eve Rosser. With the diary entries it made Eve seem extremely immature while this story demonstrated how resilient she is despite everything falling apart around her.
