From Convent To Queen By: Millie Adams (Book Review)
***This review will contain spoilers***
Summary:
Confined to a convent for her own protection, Princess Fern is resigned to leading a sheltered life. Until King Ragnar storms in, demanding the bride he was promised! Fern must exchange one prison for another, yet her marriage feels shockingly like liberation. As does the dormant passion her captor ignites…Ragnar has claimed his throne and now, his queen—if only his warrior’s demons were so easily fought. But Fern resurrects the humanity he’d thought lost...and stokes an inferno that threatens to obliterate the convenient boundaries of their royal union!
Yet again I found another book while grocery shopping! I don’t know what is going on lately but I keep coming across books while out in the ‘wild’ that I feel compelled to purchase.
When I originally read the summary, I was certain it was set during medieval times because modern day royalty isn’t as exciting in comparison to centuries prior. It definitely threw me for a loop when I finally realized it was based in the twenty-first century. I guess for the sake of being fiction both countries Cape Blanco and Asland were made up. I do appreciate the author trying to add some backstory on the countries, especially, Asland which is where a good chunk of the book takes place. I could, however, tell the author is American because Cape Blanco is a real area in Oregon where there are hiking trails and was first discovered by a Spanish discoverer.
This is one of those short stories where you can just turn your mind off and enjoy the ride. It’s not difficult to comprehend and it isn’t overly layered with several plot lines.
While I did enjoy the overall story, I did find it unfinished. I don’t know if that's just a sign of how much I enjoy a more complex story but I found it could have used a few more chapters to really develop the relationship between Ragnar and Fern. I’m to that point in my life where I can’t rationally accept that two people fall in love with each other and most of the scenes shared are sex scenes.
One scene that very much needed a leap of faith was where they have sex and Ragnar’s release essentially, triggered his memories to come back…like huh??? I have heard of strange ways to trigger repressed memories but sex definitely is the first I have ever heard.
Rating:
I'm giving it 3 stars out of 5. It was an okay read and it would have definitely benefited from having a couple more chapters to round out the story. I did quite like the plot twist where Ragnar's father is the reason why his mother was murdered and the country was taken over by a dictator. It was a great story that I would have preferred it as a full novel and not a short story.
