Feast Of Fools (The Morganville Vampires #4) By: Rachel Caine (Book Review)
***This review will contain spoilers***
Summary:
In the town of Morganville, vampires and humans live in relative peace. Student Claire Danvers has never been convinced, though, especially with the arrival of Mr. Bishop, an ancient, old-school vampire who cares nothing about harmony. What he wants from the town's living and its dead is unthinkably sinister. It's only at a formal ball, attended by vampires and their human dates, that Claire realizes the elaborately evil trap he's set for Morganville.
I love how much Caine is able to pack in a book of just a couple hundred pages. It's like non stop organized chaos. There's a war brewing with Bishop in town and all these motherfuckers are playing chess while most of the humans in town are unsure of what is even happening. Another reason why I love Claire is that no matter how outnumbered or outpowered she is, she is still going to stand up for what's right and hold her ground. Granted she might not hold it for long but nonetheless she has the bravery of a thousand men and a few vampires.
I find it intriguing that Claire and Amelie have this strange mutual understanding and connection. They are both using each other to further their own agenda. Claire uses Amelie to protect herself and her loved ones while also using Amelie's connections to further expand her intelligence and knowledge. While Amelie is using Claire's brilliance to help Myrnin figure out a cure to help save the vampires from a deteriorating disease. Not sure how vampire can develop Alzheimer's but the Morganville vampires aren't as infallible or indestructible as other vampires from different books. Definitely makes it for an interesting read and freaking nerve wracking when Myrnin gets into one of his 'moods'.
With the new players in town people who were foes are now friends and when you think Morganville couldn't be any more dangerous we add in those crazy new bastards and now no one is safe...whether you have protection or not. They don't play by the rules. Who would have thought after everything that has happened I would be relieved to have Oliver save the day. Bishop is Amelie's father in every sense of the word yet she has attempted to kill him but nothing has worked thus far..is he the first vampire? I originally thought with the way Amelie held herself she was the first. For someone who is so powerful be afraid of their own father what chance do the rest of the gang have?
Bishop is old school crazy vampire that you read about. Treating humans like vermin and expecting everyone to bow down to him or death is swiftly dealt. The pivotal point in the story is at the big masquerade/ costume ball help by Bishop and in attendance the most affluent vampires in town with their human offering of choice. Yup, you read that right. What was first seen as being of importance to be in attendance for humans is actually just a gift bag for Bishop if he chooses to take a bite out of the vampire's offering. Goes to show just how much Amelie values Claire when she forbids her to attend. Luckily, Claire is too stubborn to follow such an order and instead Myrnin and her attend it together. Myrnin barely holding it together not only puts on a show for everyone but then stabs Bishop and fucks right off. Leaving poor Claire to be on the receiving end of Bihops anger.
Claire is such a badass. She was the first one to stand up against Bishop and be by Amelie's side. Not even Sam or Oliver went by her side first but Claire a weak 'fragile' human did. Unfortunately, Bishop had more vampires on his side to surprise Amelie and her faction. Jason being the two timing rat that he is pretended to be hurt so he could get close enough to Amelie to stake her right in the heart. Our local scooby gang had to retreat back home and only chaos ensued afterwards. Just absolute chaos to the town and many homes and businesses have been torched. But beyond all of that Claire being the over achiever finds Myrnin and found out that Bishop's blood is the cure to what has been ailing the vampires of Morganville.
Rating:
5 stars on 5! How can I not give this a perfect score when it was absolutely mind blowing. I love a well written story with a consistently evolving story. I originally read the first 6-ish books when I was a teenager and now re-reading them ten plus years later I still am enjoying them so much and cannot get enough!
