The Nun (Movie Review)

***There will be spoilers in this review***

Summary:

When a young nun at a cloistered Abbey in Romania takers her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order's unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun from the Conjuring 2 as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

Opening scene:

Taking place in 1952, we are automatically being reintroduced to the same demonic entity; Valak that the Warrens fought. The demon is hunting down nuns in an abbey and wrecking havoc on their lives. The haunting is so severe that one of the nuns takers her own life to escape the demon and prevent it from possessing her body.

From start to finish, this is a frighteningly well done movie. It brings all the elements from the previous conjuring movies while giving us more insight on how evil works and operates. This was an amazing scary movie and what really did it for me was the fact that if the nuns had no chance in protecting themselves, how could we? These nuns have devoted their lives to God and yet they lost the battle on our Earthly plane. Nothing is more terrifying than than feeling as if there is no hope and you're doomed. But when it feels like all hope is gone Jesus Christ saves the day as he always does! It goes to show just how powerful Valak is that they need the blood of Christ to defeat it.

I like that they added a little backstory on how the castle was originally used to summon the forces of evil and open the gates to hell on Earth but Christian knights defeated the duke and closed off the doorway to hell. I think just that alone would have been a killer movie. The duke was originally obsessed with the occult and made humans sacrifices to bring forth the demon into our realm.

I love that the actors of sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are actually sisters in real life. They look alike that I wonder if the writers will do anything to try to tie these two together in future films. It would be a nice full circle moment and I think the fans would appreciate it. Especially, since sister Irene and Lorraine both receive visions from God to help those in need and fight the forces of evil. They have so much in common that it would be nice to see these two fight evil together.

The one thing that has been consistent throughout all the Conjuring and Annabelle movies is how they connect to each other. I fucking love and live for full circle moments. Frencie aka Maurice helped sister Irene and Father Burke fight against the demon but Valak finds a way to attach and hide itself in Frenchie and years later both Lorraine and Ed are brought in to exercise the demon out of him. This Maurice is the same one that they were speaking of during one of their lectures in the first Conjuring movie. The one thing about Frenchie that doesn't add up is the horrible non-existent French Canadian accent. Even the French was terrible. They could have at least tried getting a French Canadian actor.

Rating:

5 out of 5 stars! Yet another amazing movie! There are talks for a second nun movie and I'm excited how much more they can expand this story. From what we've seen the demon can torment multiple at the same time so I wonder if in the second movie we'll see the same thing happening. One thing I would love more of is more of the Vatican and just how much they have protected others and fought against evil on Earth. Great movie and I'm excited for the next one!
