True Blood |Season 2 Episode 7: Release Me (Review)

 ***This review contains spoilers***

Opening scene was pretty intense in comparison to some openings scenes from season one. Bunch of people naked, possessed and dancing. Sam being restrained to be sacrificed by Maryann. For all the times Andy has been the dickhead playing cop he shoots his gun and it gives Sam the opportunity to run away. Unfortunately, Andy ends up getting his own arm broken playing cop when trying to control the possessed townsfolk. When Andy confronts them in Merlotte's while they are 'normal' they just laugh him off as if he's been drinking again. Both Tara and Arlene have expressed their concerns to them not remembering huge chunks of time. Tara seems to start having concerns when it comes to Maryann.

We discover that Maryann is a maenad which is a follower of Dionysus. That explains all the drinking, gluttony and sexual behaviour that the townsfolk exhibit when Maryann is influencing them. If she really is a maenad then that means she is several thousand years old. Makes you wonder what she wants with Sam and why she would have Daphne killed when she has been the perfect little follower.

Jason has got to be one of the most consistent characters on the show. He commits adultery with Sarah Newlin but as soon she utters the word love he's almost repulsed and taken aback. She obviously thought there was more going on between them than he did. But Jason above all else cares for his family. He might have difficulties showing it but he'll defend them tooth and nail. It was nice seeing Jason kicking Gabe's ass when he made remarks about his sister.

One thing that has been bugging me like crazy is that the vampires are aware that Hugo and Sookie are in the church after sundown. They haven't checked in at all and the vamps are not doing a single thing. Why would they ever stay till late evening and even overnight? I find this really poor writing. It would have made more sense if the fellowship forced them to message the vampires saying that they will be staying overnight which that still seems suspicious but would have made more sense to the story. Hugo being the rat isn't all that surprising, what is is that Sookie never once picked it up on him.

Bill still has not gone and saved the day like Sookie is expecting. Instead he too is being held hostage by Lorena. Even after all these years apart she still wants and loves him. Lorena tries to shame him for his relationship with Sookie yet she's so starved for love and companionship. Bill says she has no humanity but I think if she had what she wanted, needed and someone who was a positive influence then she could be an entirely different person.

We finally get a glimpse of modern day Godric! He comes out of nowhere ripping Gabe off of Sookie while he's trying to rape her. If he's able to roam around freely or if he broke free of his chains (doubt it since he doesn't have a mark and doesn't look weak) which either way why would he be held captive for several weeks then? Very curious.
