Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid #1) By: Richelle Mead (Book Review)

 ***This review will contain spoilers****

Summary:

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical? But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore--free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't. But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny. . .

You would think with the title and the protagonist being a succubus that there would be a shit ton of sex scenes but surprisingly there were very few sex scenes and the ones we did have were extremely tame. Granted, no one can beat Laurell. K Hamilton when it comes to sex scenes but I expected more raunchy sex scenes. It was surprising that this book was about a succubus hating being a succubus and trying to live a normal human life even though nothing about her life is normal.

Georgina or originally known as Letha was a mortal woman a very long time ago who was married but she was seeking to feel wanted by a man and she cheated on her husband. Her husband caught her in the act and the pain of the separation was too much for her so she sold her soul to make everyone forget about her. It's a waste if you ask me, especially, giving up your soul for a man. Out of all the things she could've asked for and she wants everyone who has ever known her to forget about her, what a freaking waste.

It’s ironic that a succubus who is meant to corrupt and lure men actually goes only for the scumbags and lowlifes. A succubus with humanity who tries to live a normal life and tortures herself with the possibility of falling in love but never actually able to actualize her deepest desires. She gets to meet her all time favourite author; Seth Mortensen and seems to get herself stuck in a love triangle with a new man named Roman. During this time, immortals turn up dead and some severely beaten. I'm happy that we have a protagonist who at least has half a brain and does all the detecting shit to find out what the hell is going on.

The person or persons were Nephilim. Nephilim's are the offspring of human women and angels and/or demons but because of the chaos they can create their immortal fathers are forced to end their existence. Pretty shitty ending when your own father wants nothing to do with you. I had an idea that Roman was a Nephilim because the rule of thumb is when there is chaos in your life it's normally the newcomer who is at fault for it. But the most shocking thing was that he had a sister! Helena the crazy aura seeing babbling buffoon of new age crap was Romans sister and a Nephilim!

Luckily with Georgina's quick wit she was able to send for help and all but one of the twins died. And of course Roman survived because what is a drama filled book without the former love interest coming back to seek revenge. As if we couldn't add insult to injury when it comes to Georgina's life. Seth witnessed the mayhem of Nephilim vs father and Georgina bargained with Jerome that she will seduce and wreck havoc on men for fifty years if Seth gets to keep his memories of what he saw and of his knowledge of the supernatural world. She becomes a succubus to make everyone forget about her and then she bargains to be the best succubus to have Seth keep his memories. How fucking ironic is that?

Rating:

I am going to give Succubus Blues 4 stars on 5. Mead gives a new perspective regarding Succubus' and on how not every person on hell's side is truly evil. Which for many people might take the notion that she is trying to sell as being deceptive since it's like we are allowing ourselves to give evil a chance to harm us but let's be honest here. Just cause you sit on a pew does not make you a good person. I've been cussed at by a woman standing on a church's steps so it's definitely on the nose. It did take a bit of time to pick up the pace but overall it was a fun exciting read and I can't wait to read the next one!
