Crimson Peak (Movie Review)

For the life of me I do not know why it took me so long to finally watch this movie. I have a lot to say about this movie so be prepared for this to take a while.

((((There will be spoilers so if you haven't watched the movie then you have been warned!)))))

In this movie we have Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. Director: Guillermo del Toro.

After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) young Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself in his Gothic mansion. Also living there is Lady Lucille Sharpe (Jessica Chastain) Thomas' alluring sister and keeper of all of the family's dark secrets. Edith with her ability to communicate and see the dead, tries to make sense of Allerdale Hall. However, she'll come to find that the ghosts roaming about the rotting mansion are not the most terrifying monsters to find.

(Opening scene) Edith is in the snow with blood all over her face and hands.

Now for a little back story on our protagonist Edith Cushing-
At 10 years old her mother passed away due to black cholera, however, she does not stay dead. Her mother comes back as a ghost, absolutely terrifying her young daughter warning her of Crimson Peak (early meta-fiction going on).
Edith is an inspiring young novelist (it's like looking in the mirror) But then she gets a terrifying visit from her mother yet again with the same warning.
All I'm saying is if my mother becomes a ghost she better not be that terrifying!

At the McMichael party when Edith and Sir Thomas were dancing the waltz, it was so evident that the candle's flame extinguished yet I also felt the intensity between both partners.

We the audience obviously know who killed Edith's father now my question is; did Thomas actually do it out of love or is there an ulterior motive? I do have to say Thomas divulging to Edith how he feels for her brought tears to my eyes.

When Edith finally arrives at Allerdale Hall a dog comes out of no where and gains her affections. However, we find out from Thomas and Lucille that the dog was meant to be dead and Edith's money is what the pair was really after. Hmm any other secrets to be discovered?

After so long we finally know what Edith's mother meant by warning her of Crimson Peak. Due to the clay in the ground, the snow turns bright red like spilled blood, thus, Crimson Peak.

Lucille's eyes are filled with such pain and coldness that it makes me wonder what her story is. Especially when you see how upset she was when left alone. I thought that she completely lost all shred of sanity but really my heart goes out to her. We do find out that Lucille was actually the one who killed Edith's father.

The ending completely had me in tears. Such monstrous love that brings death, pain and tragedy must end in death. Who I am really crying for are the Sharpe siblings. They were not shown any better. They had to protect what they knew. They did not have parents to help them or guide them. All they knew was pain, anger and they had to rely on each other for love. It is moments like these that I wish such characters as Lucille would feel what a mothers love feels like. Especially, when she had to bare witness to her father attacking her mother and having to nurse her back to health. But her mother with her cane would actually hit Lucille who in turn took the brunt of her mother's attacks to protect her brother. It explains why Lucille has scars on her face.

When I think of Lucille and see the pain in her eyes my heart aches. If only she could have had someone there to guide her or help her then maybe she would not of ended where she had. I can only imagine the pain she must of felt.

When I look at her I want to hold her in my arms like a mother would a child protecting her from all her pain. There is so much more we could have had seen from her character. I wish we could have seen more from both Thomas and Lucille's true characters than just those few minutes. To really demonstrate the love they have for one another.

Edith as a character could have had more depth to her. I don't feel she changed much at all. I wish I could have seen her face to face with her mother and she would have said "Thank You" for the warnings. At times she seemed almost afraid of her gift. But towards the end she finally asks the ghosts to show her what needs to be seen.

I do want to clarify why I cried a lot. I cried a lot because I felt that the Sharpe siblings deserved a better ending than death. For all the pain and suffering that occurred I wish they would have had a happy ending. To them they did things for love. I feel that those who have suffered so much should have a chance at a happy ending. I do wish that del Toro would make a movie as a prequel to Crimson Peak. So we could gain insight on their past and how the Sharpe siblings came to be who they are. (I would be super excited if such a movie would be in the works).

I saw someone in an interview (I don't quite remember who) said that Crimson Peak had ghosts that have never been portrayed so humanly. And the first thing I think of is "WRRRRONNNNGGG" haven't you seen the Insidious movies? If anything almost all the ghosts are human looking.

For the rating of Crimson Peak. After further reflection I am going to give this movie 4 out of 5 stars. The fact that I was so enamored by the story and the Sharpe siblings while also wanting to see their past plus crying so much just shows to me that this movie deserves the rating that I am giving. I tip my hat to del Toro because he produced a phenomenal movie. There were some things to be desired but nonetheless it was a beautiful constructed movie.
