Undertone (Movie Review)

 ***This review will contain spoilers***

Summary:

The host of a popular paranormal podcast becomes haunted by terrifying recordings mysteriously sent her way.

This was definitely an interesting scary movie but not a traditional paranormal movie. I found it to be more of a psychological thriller more than anything else. While there were some paranormal aspects to the story it felt more like things that can be explained away if you were a skeptic.

One thing that I couldn't help but pick up on was first with the previews there were a couple movies that had the name Mother Mary or some variation of it in the movie title which clearly the movies had nothing to do with her and then in this movie there was a bastardized figurine that kept popping up. It's as if Hollywood and the Satanists who run it can't help but keep mocking her. The more I'm reading my Bible and getting closer to Christ, the more I'm seeing how truly evil this world is even in something as simple as a movie.

I really liked the story and the background that was created because it was definitely something I've never seen before. Essentially, the podcast is emailed ten audio files about this couple who were recording themselves while sleeping (think Paranormal Activity style) and weird somewhat demonic occurrences start. Funny enough, what occurred in the audio files started occurring in Evy's mom's house. What makes it creepy is the fact her mother is essentially on her death bed but the demon behind all the weird activity in the house is the reason why her mother is up and walking around with Evy realizing it.

I wasn't a big fan of the ending. The movie felt unfinished and we didn't really know if Evy and her mother died. The only thing we do know is what has happened to others in the past so the assumption is that they are dead and I wish they would have given us a couple more scenes to tie up loose ends. If we are talking about the creepy factor, Evy is pregnant and it would have been pretty disturbing if there were some scenes of her cutting up her own abdomen to 'meet' her baby. I'm not trying to be gruesome but the ending left a lot to be desired and had me turning to my friend asking if that was it?

Rating:

I'm giving Undertone 3 stars on 5. While it wasn't the best movie I've seen this year, it definitely isn't the worst one. Movies that have such a well thought out plot/backstory but have an issue ending it probably really piss me off. They went through so much trouble to come up with something decent only to not be able to bring it to the finish line? Disappointing to say the least.
