Myrnin's Tale (The Morganville Vampires #0.1) By: Rachel Caine (Book Review)

***This review will contain spoilers***

 Summary:

This story came about just because I wanted to know more about Myrnin for my own understanding of his character, and sometimes, the best way to achieve that is to write a character’s history from his/her point of view. The character tells me what’s important, and what changed, for better or worse. Discovering that Myrnin’s father had some type of mental disorder was important to me, because of course when he was born, such things weren’t really understood. When I was working on the draft of the first book in which Myrnin appeared, my co-worker who read it said, ‘Oh, you’ve written a bipolar character, and he’s actually really cool! Did you know that I take medication for that?’ She went on to relate all the ways he was familiar to her. I was amazed, and honoured. I won’t name the co-worker, for privacy, but I say now, as then: thank you for sharing your story with me, and you know who you are. I hope Myrnin continues to make you proud.

These short stories are always so interesting and beyond infuriating all at the same time. Interesting because it gives perspective and a different outlook on characters we typically don't get to see much of let alone any sort of backstory. However, it is so infuriating when I finally get into the rhythm of the story for it to just cut off and end.

Myrnin is such an interesting character and in the Morganville series we don’t really get to find out much about his background or even how old he really is. The deteriorating disease plaguing the Morganville vampires is quite advanced in Myrnin and he keeps having more bad days than good. The animalistic side of him comes out at the most inopportune times. So it’s nice seeing this side of him that we’ve never been introduced to before.

His father was plagued with a mental illness and was basically chained in a shack like a rabid animal. That scene was striking to me because it automatically made me compare it to Myrnin being locked away in a cell because his mind and sanity keeps slipping away. Are they tied together? Does this mean that the vampires with a history of mental illness can somewhat cause this unknown disease to develop quicker in them in comparison to others?

In this very short story we find out that Myrnin was first introduced by becoming the apprentice of Gwion who is a vampire. In fact, he is older than even Amelie and her father; Bishop. Which leads to my next question; how did they become to be vampires? At first, through Claire's POV it seemed like Amelie was the first but then her father shows up to town proving her wrong. Makes you wonder just how far back they go.

For such a short story we definitely got a bit more backstory on Myrnin and vampires but...I WANT MORE!!! Definitely 5/5 stars.
