Deadpool & Wolverine (Movie Review)
**This review will contain spoilers***
Summary:
Deadpool's peaceful existence comes crashing down when the Time Variance Authority recruits him to help safeguard the multiverse. He soon unites with his would-be pal, Wolverine, to complete the mission and save his world from an existential threat.
I do want to preface by saying that I grew up watching the X-Men movies and the animated series. Hugh Jackman is the only and only Wolverine I acknowledge unless we get some more Cavillrine then I'd be okay with him having some more screen time. It's no lie that the X-Men movies have been dropping in quality for years, however, they have casted some of the most amazing actors who in my humble opinion could not be replaced. Long before Ironman there was DareDevil and Elektra, our Spiderman was Tobey Maguire and Wesley Snipes single handedly saved Marvel studios and paved the way for comic book heroes. I know that Disney has been trying to merge the gap between the MCU and X-Men but lets be for real here. The only way to truly and successfully merge the two is with the Scarlet Witch. Like DeadPool has been saying in the DP franchise there's not a big enough budget to afford more of the X-Men in his movies.
The opening scene has got to be one of the most iconic and well done openings in a very long time. Using N-Sync's Bye Bye Bye song to not only choreograph a fight but also to give us DancePool was so freaking awesome. And if you guys haven't figured it out yet in the music video Ashes by Celine Dion Deadpool said that he should have asked N-Sync to feature their song. It took a few years but he finally got his wish. One big issue that keeps coming up, especially, in the X-Men movies is the whole time travel issue and knowing what the new timeline is. I'm happy they didn't mess up with Logan's ending but instead found another Wolverine.
This movie doesn't feel like a Deadpool 3 movie but a standalone movie that heavily features Wolverine. The reason why I feel this way is because the first two movies were heavily focused on Wade and Vanessa, on him saving her...both times and how they love each other so much that nothing not even death will keep them apart. Fast forward to this movie and they're not even together? How does that make sense? What was the point of time travel to save her if you weren't going to stay together? And from her perspective, why would she ever leave the man who literally changed time for her to be alive? Just to be a close friend with a possibility of reconnecting? That just seemed poorly written. If this doesn't lead to Vanessa becoming CopyCat and Deadpool embarking on his mission to meet Death then this was for nothing and a waste of time.
Before anyone comes for me. Vanessa could have already triggered her Mutant gene to become active when Francis locks her in the chamber in the first Deadpool movie. Deadpool is obsessed with Lady Death in the comics and now her being introduced in Agatha All Along and we could very well see those two together. Do I really think it'll happen? No, but Elizabeth Olsen was able to manifest House Of M and I am manifesting this to happen.
One thing I was not a fan of was the Void and it’s close similarities with Mad Max. I know there’s only so much they can do with desert. But come on! The vehicles and transport was wayyyy too similar. However, I loved how we had some blasts from the past and actors who came back to play their Mutant character. Sabretooth, Toad, Pyro, Azazel and so many more. Granted most of them were short lived but man it was nice to see them again. And that right there was a main reason why the film felt so incomplete. Chris Evans finally back playing Johnny or Human Torch from Fantastic 4. Deadpool was right to kill him off early. He was taking up too much of the budget for such a short and useless cameo. Take away all the nostalgia and you're left with a not so greatly written script. It tried fitting too much in a couple of hours and while I am super grateful that we got to see so many characters that paved the way for the MCU to be what it is today it just felt underwhelming.
Rating:
This is getting 2.5 stars out of 5. At the end of the movie I turned to my boyfriend and we asked each other "is that it?". We even ended up buying the movie to see if maybe the deleted scenes would add and complete the whole feel of the movie and quite honestly that did nothing. If anything I told my boyfriend we wasted money buying a almost $30 movie just to be even more disappointed. The special content and deleted scenes you get when you buy the blueray disc can already be found all over social media. We paid an additional $12 only to get a couple minutes of deleted scenes that add absolutely nothing to the story. I'm thrilled Tatum finally got his chance to be Gambit on the big screen and hopefully now he gets his own movie, and same as Cassandra Nova. It's about time they graced the big screen but damn it. There just was too much for a couple of hours only for the movie to feel choppy and incomplete. Let's not even get started on all the gay jokes. They cranked that shit to a 20 this movie and it was just wayyyy over the top. I pray the next movie is better written.
